I love Christmas, and I can work on Christmas stuff all year around. In fact I did my snowman tatting pattern earlier this year in the spring. And this new tatting pattern is for Christmas lights garland.
I did my Christmas lights in red, green, blue, purple, pink, yellow, and orange. But, you could also do different color combinations.
You could do the more traditional Christmas colors and do green, red and white bulbs. Or, you could even use silver or gold metallic threads to make sparkly Christmas lightbulbs.
I think doing purple and silver metallic Christmas lights would be super adorable. But, you could do any color combination.
This is a really easy tatting pattern, so it would be great for a beginner. And you could use this Christmas lights garland to decorate your fireplace, your crafting area, or whatever you want to decorate.

Here is the tatting diagram for the Christmas lights garland.
The finished Christmas lightbulbs are approx. 2 1/4″ tall and 2″ wide. And using 21 Christmas lightbulbs the garland is approx. 41″ long.
This free tatting pattern uses the ball and shuttle tatting method, but you can also make this Christmas garland using needle tatting instead.

Ch: 6ds – 6ds, turn.
R: 6ds + 4ds – 6ds close, turn.
This finishes the outer edge of the Christmas bulb, now we’re going to work on the inner part of the Christmas bulb. Do Not cut the thread, but continue the pattern below.
Ch: 3ds – 4ds – 3ds, turn.
R: 4ds + 4ds + 4ds – 5ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds, turn.
R: 3ds + 4ds + 8ds + 4ds – 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds, turn.
R: 5ds + 4ds + 4ds + 4ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds – 4ds – 3ds. Connect the end of this chain to the base of the first ring you made. Now, cut and tie off the ends of the thread and weave them in.
Base:
Wind your shuttle with the size 30 black crochet thread.
R: 3ds – 3ds – 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds – 3ds join the chain picot on the bottom of the lightbulb top, 3ds, turn.
R: 3ds + 3ds – 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds + 3ds – 3ds, turn.
R: 3ds + 3ds – 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds – 3ds – 3ds, turn.
R: 3ds + 3ds join to the picot of the first ring, 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds – 3ds – 3ds. Connect the end of this chain to the base of the first ring. Cut and tie off the threads and weave them in.
I made 3 lights out of every color I mentioned above for a total of 21 Christmas lightbulbs.
Making the Garland:
Using the green size 10 crochet thread, we’re going to make the garland.
Step 1: The first step is to make a ring that is 15ds.
Step 2: Next, start a chain and make 20 double stitches.
Step 3: Join to the picot of the lightbulb’s base and make 4 double stitches and join to the other picot of the lightbulb’s base.
Step 4: Make 25 double stitches and attach another Christmas lightbulb like you did the other lightbulb.
Step 5: Repeat step 4 until you have attached however many Christmas lights as you want.
Step 6: After you have added all the lights to your garland, make 20 double stitches and a ring of 15 double stitches. Now cut and tie off the ends of the thread and weave them in.
Now, you have a finished Christmas lights garland. I love Christmas crafts and this one is great for decorations.
And you could make the light bulbs in different colors if you want. Or, in different color combinations.
That’s the great thing about crafting. You can change the color of the thread or you can adjust the size of the thread.
If you want to change the size of the crochet thread, you just need to know that changing the size of the thread will change the size of the finished product.

Thanks! I think it’s a delightful pattern and have saved it to Pinterest. I don’t have electric lights on my Christmas tree, these would be a fun alternative.
