Who doesn’t love quilting, and quilts can come in so many different sizes. Right now my favorite size of quilts are the throw quilts. This post about the different quilt sizes you can make and their dimensions.
There are small quilts, so you can make your own lap quilt or a baby quilt for a baby shower. Or, there are larger quilts you can make like king or queen size quilts.
For bed quilts you just want to make sure that you have enough drape on the sides of the bed and to cover the whole top of the mattress. But, mattress sizes are usually just standard sizes. So, if you know the size of the bed you shouldn’t have to measure it.
Quilting has been around for a very long time and is one of my favorite crafts. I love buying the fabric, piecing the quilt top and quilting the layers together. I especially love buying the fabric.

What is a quilt?
Before we get into the different sizes of quilts, let’s talk about what quilts are. A quilt is a blanket that is made from three layers.
The layers of the quilt are the quilt top, the batting and the backing. The quilt top is the beautiful front of the quilt, that has taken hours for you to piece.
The batting is the fluffy middle layer of the quilt. Batting is what gives the quilt it’s warmth and thickness. There is different thicknesses of batting you can buy. And batting comes in different materials, like cotton, polyester, and cotton/polyester blends. So, you can pick if you want a natural fiber or not. You can also get pre-cut batting for whatever size of quilt you’re making.
And the last layer of a quilt is the backing. The backing is the fabric that is on the back of the quilt. The backing fabric can be solid or can be a print. And flat sheets can make great backing fabric.

Standard quilt sizes
If you’re looking quilt sizes, you’ve probably noticed that people have different ideas on what the standard size is. There is no right or wrong to quilt sizes, it’s whatever size you want to make your quilt.
I’m going to give you what I think are the standard sizes. But, when you’re making your own quilt you can make it to whatever size and dimensions you want. And this is really just a guideline to quilt sizes.
If some of the lap quilt sizes aren’t quite long enough, then add a little extra length to the quilt. So, the quilt is the right size, it’s all really just personal preference. The first number is the width and second number is the length measurements.
- A great baby quilt size would be 30″ x 40″
- Crib quilts are usually 36″ x 52″
- I like 50″ x 65″ for the size of a throw quilt or lap quilt
- A good size for a twin quilt would be 70″ x 90″
- Next is a full-size quilt, there usually 80″ x 95″
- A queen size quilt is 90″ x 108″
- And lastly king quilts are 110″ x 108″
There’s the list of my standard sizes of quilts and these would be for the finished size of your quilt. A finished quilt is a quilt that has been pieced, quilted, and binding has been sewn around the edges. Quilt patterns will tell you what the finished quilt measurements.
If you’re not for sure what size of mattress you have then you can always take a tape measure and measure the bed and look up what size it is.
If you’re a beginner quilter and not for sure which size to start with. A good place to start is with smaller quilts, like the baby or crib quilt, or even a throw blanket not a larger quilt. You can even do wall quilts that are for more decorative purposes or table runners.
I didn’t put California king size in the list. Those would be a little bit larger than regular king-sized beds.
What is the oldest quilt pattern?
Now that we’ve talked about quilt size guidelines, let’s talk about quilt patterns. There are a bunch of beautiful quilt patterns.
I love looking at all the different quilt patterns. Quilting has been around so long that we’re probably using so of the same patterns. But, do you know what the oldest quilt pattern is? I researched it and most people think that the crazy quilt pattern is the oldest.
You can find quilt patterns for just about any kind of quilt. Vintage looking quilts or more modern looking quilts. But, no matter what type of quilt you’re making you can use any color of fabric. I love vibrant colors for quilts, but if you prefer more neutral look that’s fine. Because, there’s no quilt police to tell you what types of quilts or colors you should use.
And speaking about quilt patterns did you know that all quilts have the same seam allowance. That’s right the seam allowance for piecing a quilt is a 1/4″.
And I really don’t have a favorite quilt pattern designer. Because there are so many great patterns out there to choose from. That I can’t pick my favorite brand of quilt patterns.
Needing some new quilt pattern ideas? Pinterest is where I go to look for inspiration for new quilts.
