I have been making a lot of pumpkins here lately. Felt pumpkins, tatted pumpkins and now fabric pumpkins.
Here are the other pumpkin tutorials.
The free felt pumpkin pattern is adorable and has two sizes of pumpkins. A smaller sized pumpkin and a large pumpkin pattern.
This is a tutorial for making easy fabric pumpkins. In this tutorial you take a plain rectangle of fabric and turn it into a pumpkin. This is a easy tutorial for stuffed pumpkins and these pumpkins make great Fall decor or table decorations and would be perfect for decorating your Thanksgiving table.
To make this DIY fabric pumpkin I use both hand sewing and a sewing machine. But, if you prefer you can use all hand sewing instead. To me this is the easy way to make fabric pumpkins, because you only need one piece of fabric, not 10 fabric pieces.
And the pumpkin stem is made out of felt. But, you could always replace the felt with a cork, cinnamon stick, a regular stick, pipe cleaner or even a wooden spool.
The great thing about this free pattern is that you don’t have to print anything out. There are no pattern pieces to cut out, because you just use a basic rectangle to make the adorable fabric pumpkins.
You maybe wondering how a rectangle of fabric can make a pumpkin shape. But, after you stitch it together you’ll see it start to look like a pumpkin.
And this is a great beginner sewing project, the stuffed pumpkin is also great for using scrap fabric.

I use cotton fabric for this small pumpkin. The type of fabric you use in a sewing project can be very important. I have only made these cloth pumpkins using cotton fabric. But, you can try using other fabric types if you prefer, like you could use velvet fabric to make velvet pumpkins.
If you want to make different sizes of pumpkins, then you’ll need to adjust the size of the rectangle. You can make an entire pumpkin patch with this free fabric pumpkin pattern.
The finished size of pumpkin is approx. 4″ wide and 3.5″ tall with the stem.
Go!
Pumpkin:
Step 1: Gather the supplies and cut out your rectangle of fabric.
Step 2: Fold the fabric in half right sides together, lining up the short edges and sew the short sides together using a quarter-inch seam allowance. I use my sewing machine for this seam, but you could hand stitch this seam if you prefer.
Step 3: Fold the raw edges 1/2″ toward the wrong sides of the fabric on one end of the fabric.
Step 4: Take the sewing needle and thread and do a running stitch or gathering stitch around the folded end of fabric to gather the fabric.
Step 5: Hold and stitch the gathered end together. And this is the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 6: Turn the fabric right side out and fold the other raw edge of the fabric 1/2″ toward the wrong side of your fabric. And sew a running stitch around the folded end of the fabric.
Step 7: Stuff the pumpkin with the poly-fil and sit the pumpkin to the side.
Stem:
Step 1: Cut a 1 1/2″ x 1″ rectangle of felt. And using 2 strands of embroidery thread, stitch the shorter ends of the rectangle together to form a tube.
Step 2: Cut a 1/2″ round circle of felt and stitch the felt circle to one end of the felt tube.
Step 3: Stuff the felt tube with a little bit of poly-fil.
Step 4: Take the pumpkin and place the felt stem on the top of the pumpkin and tighten the gathered fabric around the stem.
Step 5: Stitch the stem to the gathered fabric, securing both the gathers and the stem. Tie and cut off the end of the thread.
Now, you have a finished pumpkin. I love easy sewing projects and to me this is a great sewing project if you’re at a beginner skill level of sewing. Because you use just a rectangle of fabric to create these adorable pumpkins.
If you didn’t want to sew the stem to the pumpkin you could always use a hot glue gun to glue the stem to the pumpkin. And you could always use something else for your pumpkin stem, if you didn’t want to use felt.
And you could cut out some felt leaves and glue them to the pumpkin or take a pipe cleaner and make a little curly vine. You can adjust the pattern to make it look like whatever you want it to. That’s the wonderful thing about sewing or any type of craft, you can change or adjust something however you want to.
This is a great sewing pattern for the Fall season. And the fabric pumpkins would be a great decoration for your living room or for your dining room table.
