Here is another easy sewing tutorial for y’all to try. This blog post is a sewing tutorial on how to make a easy fabric coaster. These finished coasters are the easiest coasters you can make with just a few simple steps.
Coasters themselves are one of the easiest sewing projects there is. And these coasters are super easy, because they only use two fabric pieces and a small piece of batting. And coasters are a fun way to add a personal touch to your decor.
Fabric scraps are great for coasters, because they only use a little bit of fabric. I actually used some of the fabric I had left over from my Fourth of July pot holder to make these coasters, so I guess you could call them Fourth of July coasters. If you want to look at that free pattern you can find it Here.
If your New Year’s resolution is to start sewing, coasters are a great way to start your sewing journey, because they’re quick and easy and you don’t have to finish any raw edges. Oh, and before I forget if you want to know the name of the cotton fabrics I use, they are both from Riley Blake Designs and the red fabric is called Red, White and True Burst, and the blue is called Picadilly Main.
Now let’s get to making these DIY fabric coasters and happy sewing.

Supplies
Here is the small materials list of the supplies you need for making a easy fabric coaster.
- 2 – 5″ fabric squares (I use the same fabric for the coaster top and the back of the coaster, but I think that using two coordinating fabrics would be a great idea.)
- 5″ piece of cotton batting (you could also fusible fleece and I’ve heard of people also using Insul-Bright.)
- Straight pins
And of course you’ll need your sewing machine.
The size of the finished fabric coaster is approx. 4 1/2″. You can always use different sizes of squares of fabric for different sizes of fabric coasters. I love this size for my coasters, but you can make your coasters any size.
I’ve even seen some coasters look like a pieced quilt block on the top and a single piece of the main fabric on bottom. And since you need a 5″ piece of fabric you could even use a charm pack.
Go!
Step 1: The first thing you do is cut out your pieces of fabric and batting (or whatever material you’re using for the middle of the coasters). I like to use a rotary cutter and acrylic ruler to cut out my materials. And if you have a pretty design on your top fabric that you want in the center of the coaster, you’ll probably have to do a fussy cut.
Step 2: Lay the two pieces of fabric right sides facing together and wrong sides facing out.
And place the batting on top of the fabric and pin the layers together with a few straight pins.
Step 3: Sew the fabric layers together using a 1/4″ seam allowance and the straight stitch, leaving about a 1 1/2″ opening in the middle of one of the sides. I like to use a pen and mark a little 1 1/2″ section, so I know where to start and stop sewing.
Step 4: Clip all four of the corners (that helps to make nicely pointed corners, by removing the extra fabric).
Step 5: The next step is to turn the fabric coaster where the right side of the fabric is facing out and use a pencil or a chop stick to gently push the corners out.
Step 6: Now give the the coaster a good press, making sure that the opening edges are folded inside the coaster to look like the other sides.
Step 7: To close the opening, top stitch all the way around the coaster’s edges. This is all the quilting I did for my coasters, but you can quilt the coasters some more to give it a quilted look.
See how easy it was to make these great coasters.
Now you have a finished fabric coaster for your coffee table and you can make however many you want for a set of coasters. A fabric coaster is great for protecting your table tops from hot or cold glasses. These fun projects also would make a great gift for Mother’s day, or you could even make a bunch of different sets and sale them.
And there are all kinds of different patterns out there for coasters. You can find a PDF sewing pattern for different shapes and styles of coasters, I’ve even seen free sewing patterns for hexagon coasters. But, the most common shape of coasters is a circle shape and of course the square coasters.
You could even embroider the piece of fabric for the front of the coaster. And you can use whatever color of cotton fabric you want, you can use darker fabric or lighter fabric. Just be sure to always use cotton fabric, because cotton fabric absorbs unlike polyester or other synthetic fabric. I’ve only used cotton batting for my coasters, but I’m pretty sure that you could use either cotton or polyester batting.
Thank you for looking at this coaster tutorial for a super easy sewing project, and I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and it helped you know how to start stitching your own coasters. And I plan on doing more sewing tutorials in the future, probably some more complex coaster tutorials, pot holder tutorial and just plenty of quick and easy projects.
