Welcome to my very first tatting pattern. This is a beautiful elegant looking snowflake ornament. Besides having the written pattern down below I also have created a tatting diagram for this pattern below.
This is a shuttle tatting pattern and and I would call this a confident beginner or intermediate pattern. Because, this pattern uses split rings and floating rings (also called thrown rings) in the snowflake design.
Split rings and floating ring are not hard, but they can be intimidating and confusing to a complete beginner. And if you need a little help with either of these rings, just check at the bottom of this post to watch a couple of video tutorials I did.
This snowflake pattern would be great for making your own tatted Christmas tree ornaments. And you can do them in all colors, so you can decorate not just for Christmas, but all winter long.
I made this pattern as ornaments, but if you have another idea in mind they don’t have to be ornaments.
I’m very excited to be releasing my very first tatting pattern and I hope that you enjoy it.

Supplies
Here is what you need to make these snowflake ornaments
- #10 Crochet thread
- Tatting shuttles
- Scissors
- You can also purchase the ad-free PDF pattern on my Etsy shop Here for a small fee.
A finished snowflake is approx. 2 1/4″ wide and 2″ tall.
I have the pattern typed out down below. But, if you like to use tatting diagrams instead I also created a diagram for this pattern.
Tatting key
- ds = double stitches
- Ch = chain
- R = ring
- (-) = picot
- j = join
Go!
Start by winding two shuttles with the crochet thread.
Round 1.
Using shuttle 1.
R: 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close.
R: 4ds join to the side picot of the other ring 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close.
R: 4ds j 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close.
R: 4ds j 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close.
R: 4ds j 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close.
Split Ring: 4ds j 4ds, switch to shuttle 2 and 4ds join to the picot on the first ring you did and make 4 more ds and close.
That is the first round and the center of the snowflake.
Round 2.
Turn your work around.
Ch: 4ds – 4ds, do a floating ring with shuttle 2, 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close, and finish the Ch, 4ds – 4ds. And connect the end of the chain to the top picot of the round 1 ring.
Ch: 4ds – 4ds, now do another floating ring 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close, finish Ch, 4ds – 4ds, connect to the top picot of the ring.
Ch: 4ds – 4ds, make a floating ring 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close, finish Ch, 4ds – 4ds, connect to the top picot of the ring.
Ch: 4ds – 4ds, make another floating ring 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close, finish the Ch, 4ds – 4ds, connect end of chain to the top picot of the ring.
Ch: 4ds – 4ds, make floating ring 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close, finish Ch, 4ds – 4ds, join chain to the top picot of the next round 1 ring.
Ch: 4ds – 4ds, make the final floating ring 4ds – 4ds – 4ds – 4ds close, finish Ch, 4ds – 4ds. Finish by joining to the base of the split ring.
Finishing up.
After you have joined the last chain to the base of the split ring, cut both of the threads about 4 inches long. Tie the threads together against the finished snowflake and I don’t weave the ends in on this pattern.
Because the ends are what I use to hang the ornament, what you do is take the ends of the thread and wrap them around your finger and take the ends through the loop and tighten the loop about 1/2″ from the end. And you can trim ends if they are not even.
Now you have a finished snowflake ornament and you can make these in any color of crochet thread you want. And I think that red would be a great color and it would be perfect for Christmas or you could even use these tatted snowflakes to decorate for Valentine’s day
What if I want to add beads
And on the free picots you could even place beads. As I was doing this pattern I thought how pretty a beaded snowflake would be.
I actually made one of these snowflakes with beads and it’s really easy to add beads.
What you do is thread the beads on the crochet thread before you wind your shuttles. And make sure that when you start tatting that the beads are on the thread with shuttle 2.
Thank you so much for looking at the very first tatting pattern and I hope that you enjoy it. And I hope to do more tatting patterns in the future.
