Hello Spring! Here is a free tatting pattern that’s perfect for Spring and Summer. This is a free sunny sunflower tatting pattern.
This is actually one of two sunflower tatting patterns I have been working on. The other free sunflower pattern will be ready to be posted in just a week or two.
I love sunflowers, they’re just so bright and cheerful. And these tatted sunflowers will just brighten up any place you choose to decorate with them.

These sunny sunflowers can also be made into ornaments, if you want to hang them around the kitchen. And I plan on doing some more flower tatting patterns in the future. So, be sure to check back on my blog for new patterns, tutorials and more.
This is a beginner tatting pattern. This sunflower tatting pattern uses basic rings and chains.

And here is the free tatting diagram for the sunflower.
The finished sunny sunflower is approx. 3.5″ across.
And like I said above this is a beginner tatting pattern. But, with any tatting pattern you will need to have a basic knowledge of how to tat, to make anything.
I made these sunflowers by shuttle tatting, but you could always make them by needle tatting.
Tatting key
- ds = double stitches
- Ch = chain

*R: 5ds + 5ds – 5ds close, turn.
Ch: 5ds – 5ds, turn.

Repeat from * 8 more times, then continue the pattern below.

R: 3ds + 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 3ds – 3ds – 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 8ds + 8ds, turn.

Repeat from ** 8 more times and continue the pattern below.

R: 3ds – 3ds + 3ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 3ds, join to the middle picot of the first ring you made, 3ds – 3ds close, turn your work.
Ch: 8ds + 8ds, connect to the base of the first group of rings. Cut and tie off the ends and weave them in.
You may have to block the sunflower to get it to lay flat. I like to spray my tatting projects with water and just stretch them out on a flat surface and let them dry.

Now, you have a finished sunflower. These sunflowers make perfect decorations and they are so adorable.
You could use these to decorate your kitchen and you could even make these tatted sunflowers into ornaments.
Thank you for reading this free pattern and and I hope that you enjoy making these sunny sunflowers. And be sure to check back on my blog often for new posts.
