Hey y’all and welcome to my second tatting pattern. This is a free shuttle tatting pattern for a lace bookmark.
I call it a lace bookmark, because it looks like lace. And because tatting is a form of lace-making. Tatting to me is the easiest type of lace-making you can start.
I love reading and I was trying to think of a new tatting pattern, so I decided to make a bookmark pattern. This is a fancy bookmark, but would make a easy beginner project.
This pattern uses the shuttle and ball tatting method. That means you will use one shuttle that is connected to the ball of crochet thread.
Here is my other tatting pattern “Free Elegant Snowflake Ornament Tatting Pattern.“

Supplies
Here is what you need to make this lace bookmark.
- #10 Crochet Thread
- Tatting Shuttle
- Small Crochet Hook (optional)
- Scissors
- You can also purchase the ad-free PDF pattern on my Etsy shop Here for a small fee.
The crochet hook is optional, I find it easier to connect the picots with a small crochet hook. But, you don’t have to have one, or you tatting shuttle may have a crochet hook tip.
The finished bookmark is approx. 6″ long and 2″ wide.
I have the pattern typed out down below. But, if you like to use tatting diagrams instead I also created a diagram for this pattern.
Tatting key
- ds = double stitches
- Ch = chain
- R = ring
- (-) = picot
- (+) = join
Go!
Wind your tatting shuttle with whatever color of crochet thread you want.
Big leaf.
R: 3ds – 6ds – 6ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 7ds – 1ds – 1ds – 7ds – 3ds close. Hint I like to make the 3 top picots larger than the others.
R: 3ds + 6ds – 6ds – 3ds close. Now flip your work over.
Ch: 2ds – 10ds – 7ds. Flip your work back over.
Smaller leaf.
R: 3ds – 6ds join to the top picot of the last ring 6ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 6ds – 6ds – 3ds close. Flip your work over
Ch: 7ds – 10ds – 2ds, turn your work.
Make another big leaf, then make the chain below.
Ch: 2ds join to the picot of the last chain 10ds – 7ds. Turn your work.
Make another smaller leaf.
Ch: 7ds – 10ds – 2ds. Turn your work
Make a another big leaf and flip your work back over.
Ch: 2ds join to the picot of the last chain 5ds – 2ds, turn your work over.
End ring.
R: 5ds join to the top picot of the last ring 9ds – 1ds – 1ds -1ds – 9ds – 5ds, flip your work.
Ch: 2ds join to the picot of the last chain 5ds – 2ds, turn your work.
Working on the other side
Make another big leaf and turn your work.
Ch: 2ds + 10ds – join to the picot on the chain below 7ds, flip your work.
Make another smaller leaf.
Ch: 7ds + 10ds – 2ds, turn your work.
Repeat this last section 2 more times, until you have 3 big leaves and 3 smaller leaves in total on this side of the bookmark.
Make one more big leaf and turn your work
Ch: 2ds + 5ds – 2ds, turn.
Make another end ring.
Ch: 2ds + 5ds – 2ds, turn.
Make one more big leaf and flip your work.
Ch: 2ds + 10ds + 7ds, flip.
R: 3ds – 6ds + 6ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 6ds join to the top picot of the first ring you made 6ds – 3ds close.
Ch: 7ds + 10ds join to the picot of the first chain you made 2ds.
Connect the end of the chain to the first big leaf and then cut and tie off the ends.
Now you have a finished lace bookmark. If you noticed this pattern does a lot of repeating and that to me makes it a easy beginner tatting pattern to try. And I hope all the pictures helped you to understand the way this pattern goes together.
This is also a easy beginner shuttle tatting pattern, because you make simple rings and chains. I really wasn’t for sure what to call the leaves. I almost called them florals, but florals are flowers and I thought that they probably look more like leaves.
Even though they may not look exactly like leaves. That was the only way I could think of to describe them to make sense.
I love the look of this lace bookmark. One of the reasons I enjoy tatting is because it’s a vintage craft, and it makes me think of the Victorian era. And I love vintage stuff, especially vintage fashion.
