I love Christmas and here is a free Christmas tatting pattern. This free pattern is for a gingerbread man.
Gingerbread houses and gingerbread man are very popular at Christmas time. I love decorating gingerbread houses and snacking on gingerbread cookies.
So, thinking about Christmas decorations and stuff made me think about how cute a tatted gingerbread man would be. And here is a cute gingerbread man tatting pattern.
One thing I’ve learned about making tatting patterns is that it helps to sketch out the pattern a little bit before you get started, to help you kind of know how you want it to look. Even though I usually wind up changing my mind as I’m making it ;-).
This is an intermediate tatting pattern. It uses the basic ring and chains, but a complete beginner might find it a little difficult.

Supplies
- Size 10 Crochet Thread (I used the color called Copper Mist).
- (3) Black 3/8″ Buttons.
- Tatting Shuttle or Tatting Needle.
- Small Crochet Hook (optional).
- Hot Glue Gun.

A finished gingerbread man is approx. 6.5″ across and approx. 7″ tall.
This free tatting pattern uses the ball and shuttle tatting method. You could also make this with needle tatting instead of shuttle tatting if you prefer.
Tatting key
- ds = double stitches
- Ch = chain
- R = ring
- (-) = picot
- (+) = join

Round 1 of the head.
Wind your shuttle with the crochet thread.
R: 3ds – 3ds – 3ds close, turn your work.
Ch: 3ds – 3ds, turn.
R: 3ds + 3ds – 3ds close, turn.
Ch: 3ds – 3ds turn.
Repeat the last ring and chain until you have a circle of 16 connected rings and chains. Making sure to connect the last ring to the first ring you made. Connect the end of the last chain to the base of the first ring you made. Cut and tie off the ends and weave them in.
Round 1 of the body.

R: 3ds + 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 5ds join to a chain picot of round one of the head, 5ds – 3ds close, turn your work.

Now, you’ll probably have to block the gingerbread man to get it to lay flat. What I like to do is lay the tatted piece on the counter top and spray it with water and stretch it flat with my hands.
Some like to use a rolling pin to flatten the project after they spray it with water.
Adding the buttons
Using a hot glue gun, glue the 3 button down the front of the gingerbread man.
Now, you have a finished gingerbread man. You could leave the buttons off if you want or use felt instead, but I like the buttons on the gingerbread man.
