Hey y’all and welcome to my easy and simple square motif tatting tutorial. In tatting you can make a lot of different motifs.
Motifs are pretty much just what a repeated design is called. A snowflake can also be called a motif, because you’ll repeat the same steps and pattern to create each snowflake point.
This square motif is a beginner tatting project. It does have a couple of split rings and floating rings, but overall it is a very simple and easy tatting pattern.
I will also have the tutorial videos on how to make split rings and floating rings somewhere in the post below. Probably toward the end of the blog post and like my other tatting patterns, I’ll have the written instructions below and also the tatting diagram in the supplies section.
When I created this pattern I was actually sketching out a mushroom tatting pattern (and I’m still working on that one). And I was just playing around with sketching rings and I liked the rings on rings look and thought it would make a cute square motif.
And these cute little squares would also make great ornaments to me. I love the dainty look of this motif. Tatting to me is just an elegant craft and I love that it’s an old-fashioned and vintage craft.
Here is my easy and simple square motif tatting pattern and I hope that you enjoy making this cute little motif.

Supplies
- #10 Crochet thread
- Two tatting shuttles
- Small crochet hook (optional)
- Scissors
- You can also purchase the ad-free PDF pattern on my Etsy shop Here for a small fee.
And here is the tatting diagram for the simple square motif.
I always say the crochet hook is optional, because some tatting shuttles have a little hook on them or you can use the point on the tatting shuttle to connect picots. But, I like to use a small crochet hook to join the picots.
I like to use size 10 crochet thread, because it’s probably the easiest and most common size to find. But, you can use different sizes of crochet thread, it will just make the finished motif a different size.
The size of the finished simple square motif is approx. 2″.
Tatting key
- ds = double stitches
- Ch = chain
- R = ring
- (-) = picot
- (+) = join
Go!
Wind your two shuttles with whatever color crochet thread you want.
Round 1:
R: 3ds – 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close, do not flip your work over.
R: 3ds + 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close.
R: 3ds + 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close.
Split R: 3ds + 5ds change shuttles, 5ds join to the picot of the first ring you made, 3ds close.
Round 2:
Split R: 8ds change shuttles 8ds close, now turn your work over.
Ch: 6ds – 9ds, use the other shuttle and make a floating ring 3ds – 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close, and finish the Ch, 9ds – 6ds, turn.
R: 8ds join to the picot of the round 1 ring, 8ds close, turn.
Ch: 6ds – 9ds, make another floating ring 3ds – 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close, finish Ch, 9ds – 6ds, turn.
R 8ds + 8ds close, turn.
Ch: 6ds – 9ds, make a floating ring 3ds – 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close, finish Ch, 9ds – 6ds, turn.
R 8ds + 8ds close, turn.
Ch: 6ds – 9ds, make another floating ring 3ds – 5ds – 5ds – 3ds close, finish Ch, 9ds – 6ds. Join the end of the chain to the base of the round 2 split ring, next to the first chain you made. Cut and tie off the ends of the crochet thread and weave them in.
Now you have a finished simple square motif. To me these would be great for little ornaments. I can just picture these on a Christmas tree in different colors.
You could hang them at an angle where they look like diamonds, or as squares. And I think that this is just a easy and simple square motif tatting pattern for you to practice your tatting or to use to make ornaments.
