Hey everyone, welcome to my new sewing post. This post is about sewing supplies, the basic sewing supplies a beginner will need to get started sewing.
Sewing is a great craft and while it may seem daunting to start, it is really an easy craft to get started on. There are a lot of easy sewing projects for beginners to make.
I love easy sewing projects that are quick and easy to make. One of my favorite easy sewing projects is scrunchies. Here is a tutorial I did on how to make easy scrunchies.
You’re very first sewing project should be something easy to make that uses just basic sewing techniques to make it. And cotton fabric is a great fabric for beginners. Out of all the different fabrics it is the easiest to sew.

Sewing Supplies
Here is a list of the few sewing supplies you’ll need to get started on your sewing journey besides your sewing thread and fabric. And it’s a good idea to use high-quality thread and not cheap no-name thread.
Sewing Machine: Unless you prefer hand sewing, a sewing machine is the first thing you pick out and the most important part of your sewing supplies. Sewing machines can come in many different prices and brands and will usually last a long time. Here is the sewing machine I have. And a reliable sewing machine does not have to be super expensive. Tip: It’s a good idea to have some extra sewing machine needles too. I use universal needles for just about all my projects.
Fabric Scissors: Having a good pair of fabric scissors can really help your project. Because using dull or just regular paper scissors can mess up your fabric, a sharp pair of fabric scissors can cut multiple layers of fabric cleanly.
Straight Pins: Using straight pins or safety pins to hold your pattern pieces in place or to hold the fabric together before you sew it can really help to cut out your fabric right and to sew the pieces of fabric even together. You can also use them to hold the trims or laces before you stitch them on the fabric. There are also sewing clips that you can use instead of pins, but I prefer to use pins.
Seam Ripper: I use my seam ripper quite often, I know nobody like to think about mistakes. But, in sewing you’re going to make mistakes, ruin and have to redo certain parts of projects (I’ve been there), so having a handy tool like a seam ripper to undo those seams that shouldn’t have been sewn is a good idea.
Iron: A steam iron and ironing board are something else important to sewing. Because it is important to press you seams and fabrics to make everything lay right.
Tape Measure: A tape measure is an important sewing tool to have especially if you’re going to make clothing. Or to measure ribbon or elastic, so you can cut the right length. I like a retractable measuring tape and usually a basic sewing kit will come with one.
These are the six essential sewing supplies you need in your sewing box. There are many other sewing supplies out there, but these are the main ones you need to get started sewing.
And here are some post I did that will help you pick out a sewing machine and a iron.

Conclusion
Every seamstress has different ideas on what are essential tools for sewing. And there are a couple of other things that I like to have, but you don’t need them to get started.
Like sergers, your sewing machine can be used to finish you’re seam allowance. In fact I still don’t own a serger, I use my sewing machine. I will probably get one in the future, but you don’t have to have one.
And a couple of other handy tools to have around are fabric marking tools like chalk pencils or tailor’s chalk, needle threader, rotary cutter and cutting mat. Even though a good pair of scissors is what I mainly use to cut out my fabrics.
If you’re an absolute beginner at sewing and have never used a sewing machine before. I recommend to start by just practicing sewing straight lines on your fabric pieces.
Thank you for reading this post and I hope it has helped you figure out the basic sewing tools you need to get started.
