Who doesn’t love flowers, especially flowers that don’t wilt. These felt flowers would be the prefect accessory for a cork board, plus you can do them in three different sizes. You could also use these flowers to decorate a headband or a hair clip. The flowers would be great for a broach or a felt flower wreath. I’ve even thought about using the smallest flower to embroider a 18 inch doll dress.
One of the best things about this pattern is it’s a no sew pattern. That makes it perfect if you don’t like to sew.
When making the flowers you use two colors of felt and a button of whatever size you like. I like to do a dark green for the leaf and the flower in a bright color. But, you could do any color for either flower or leaf piece. The same is with the button, you can do any size and color you want for the flower. I will put what size of buttons I use for each of the flowers under the picture below. The great thing about these felt flowers is that you can make them in just a couple simple steps.
The large flower has a 3/4″ button. The medium flower has a 1/2″ button. The small flower has a 3/8″ button.
Here are the flowers sizes. The large flower is approx. 3″ wide. The medium flower is approx. 2 1/8″ wide. The small flower is approx. 1 1/4″ wide
You can also experiment with different color combinations with the flowers and leafs. Like, an orange leaf with a hot pink flower and orange button, or a hot pink leaf with an orange flower and hot pink button.
What different kinds of felt are there?
When doing felt crafts there are different kinds of felt. These are the three main types of felt.
The felt you can buy from the craft store is acrylic felt. Plastic and synthetic material is used in making acrylic felt. Also, this is the cheapest felt you can buy and this is what I use and I’ve never had any problems with it. I know a lot of crafters do not like acrylic felt, but I love it. Yes, it may be a little thinner than other felts, but to me it works great.
100% wool felt is the second felt. Wool felt is more expensive, but it’s said to be more durable than acrylic. Some say you can even wash wool felt, but I’ve never washed any felt so I don’t know.
The last felt is wool blend felt. Wool blend felt is a blend of wool and rayon. This felt is durable and it’s more affordable than the 100% wool felt.
You can use whatever felt you prefer for your crafts. When crafting there really is no right or wrong way, it just come down to preference. Right now I have been using acrylic felt, but I may get into using a more expensive wool or wool blend felt. But, acrylic felt is a really good starting felt. Because it’s the most affordable felt so you don’t have to spend tons of money on something you may not enjoy.
Plus, using acrylic felt is perfect if you need an affordable craft for kids.
