Whether you’re sewing or quilting having a good pair of scissors is important. Fabric scissors are a tool that should be in every sewing room. And this post is about what are the best scissors for quilting.
Scissors are one of the most important tools for sewing. And using the right scissors is important too, because using the wrong scissors can fray the material or make a jagged cut instead of a smooth cut. It’s the same for using dull scissors instead of sharp scissors.
For cutting any type of fabric you’ll need to use fabric scissors. Because fabric scissors are sharp and made for cutting fabric, while craft scissors or other scissors won’t cut the fabric cleanly or cut layers of fabric.
Especially in quilting getting a clean cut on your fabric is important. Because being off by even a little bit in quilting can throw off the look of the finished quilt block.
When looking for scissors there are different types of scissors for different purposes, embroidery scissors, fabric scissors, paper scissors, craft scissors and more. Fabric scissors can also be called dressmaker shears, dressmaking shears or dressmaking scissors.
You can also get pinking shears with serrated edges used for finishing fabric edges. But, in this post we’re just going to look at some of the best scissors for quilting.

Are there different sizes of scissors?
Yes, there are different sizes of scissors to choose from. You can get small scissors like embroidery scissors, and you can get larger scissors. Larger scissors can come with 7″, 8″, 9″ or 10″ long blades.
Most of the time fabric scissors come with a bent handle. Which to me are better for cutting fabric for your sewing project than the straight handle scissors. And below is a list of the best sewing scissors or best quilting scissors.
1. Fabric Scissors
This pair of fabric scissors is actually the pair of scissors I have. I love the pink color of the scissors and the multi-color titanium coated blades. These are 9″ scissors.
And this pair cuts the material smoothly and you can also purchase these scissors in blue instead of pink. But, I love pink, so I bought the pink pair and these quickly became my favorite pair of scissors.
And I use my fabric scissors just for cutting my material. I have another pair of scissors that I use for cutting out my sewing patterns or if I need to cut something other than fabric.
2. Livingo Scissors
These scissors are called Premium Tailor Scissors. And you can get this pair of scissors in 8.5″ or 9.5″. So, you can pick the size of scissors you want.
These scissors are made with forged stainless steel blades. With a comfortable handle, these high quality scissors will be a good pair of sewing scissors for quilting. Whether you’re making rag quilts or any other type of quilt.
3. Gingher Scissors
Here is the perfect scissors for your sewing room. These are a great option if you don’t mind the extra cost. But, you can get good-quality scissors in a wide range of prices.
These scissors have a straight edge and are great for getting a smooth cut. And this pair of scissors are ‎ambidextrous, so you can use these with your right hand or your left hand.
With this pair of scissors you also get a protective sheath for your scissors. And these scissors are great for cutting fabric or even for trimming seams.
4. Thread Snips
Yes, these are not fabric scissors, these are thread snips. You use these to trim threads on your project. I decided to add these to the list because in quilting you have to cut a lot of threads.
This is a pair of Singer thread snips and they are 5″ long. Thread snips are also used a lot for embroidery. And these are great to have next to your sewing machine.
5. Rotary Cutter
This last item is also not scissors, but a rotary cutter. Rotary cutters are great for cutting your quilting fabric. They have round, sharp blades that are perfect for getting precise cuts.
You use rotary cutters with cutting mats and a acrylic ruler. Rotary cutters are what I use for cutting most of my quilting fabric. I’ll even sometimes use them for cutting the fabric for other sewing projects.
Extra
There is the list of the best scissors and also a pair of thread snips and a rotary cutter. And I think it is a good idea to have a great pair of fabric scissors and a rotary cutter for cutting your quilting fabric.
If you use your fabric scissors only for cutting material then they will stay sharp a long time. I don’t use my good fabric scissors for cutting paper or even my sewing patterns, because paper dulls the scissors really fast.
And different scissors are made for different tasks. Like you could use regular scissors for cutting material, but they wouldn’t cut cleanly or be as neat, as if you used fabric scissors.
So, to keep from damaging your material it’s a good idea to use fabric scissors. I hope that this post about the best scissors for quilting has helped you, whether you’re picking out your first pair of scissors or if it’s your tenth pair.
