One of the most important parts of sewing is using the right thread. Sewing thread comes in many different brands and types. And this post is about the best brand of sewing thread.
Using the right sewing thread for your sewing project can make all the difference. Because not only are there different brands of sewing thread, there are also different types of thread. Some of the different types of sewing thread are cotton thread, polyester thread (also called all-purpose thread), silk thread, metallic thread, elastic thread, embroidery thread, quilting thread, serger thread, nylon thread and more.
I think it is a good idea to experiment with different thread types just to see how you like them. And just to research the different threads to learn what they’re for.
The kind of thread you use depends on your project and the fabric you use. It is recommended to use the same kind of thread with the same kind of fabric, like cotton thread with cotton fabric.
But, I will use all-purpose thread which is polyester thread with my cotton fabric and I’ve never had any problem with it. The right type of thread depends on the fabric you use, what you are making and pretty much what you prefer.
I will say that all-purpose polyester thread is perfect for just about any sewing project. Plus, this kind of thread comes in so many different colors that you can always find the right color in whatever shade you want at the fabric store.

Can I use cheap thread?
Before we get into the best brands of sewing thread, let’s talk about cheap thread. Now, I’m not talking about thread brands, because some great brands of sewing thread are more budget friendly than other brands.
What I’m talking about is that cheap, no-name thread that usually comes in those sewing kits, or those value packs that have a dozen or so thread spools for a couple of dollars. This kind of thread is not what you want to use, because the cheap thread can break easier and it’s fuzzier than high-quality thread.
And the fuzz from the cheap thread can build up in your sewing machine over time and can mess up your sewing machine. Cheap sewing thread can also be uneven, that means it can be thicker in some places and thinner in others.
When I first started sewing I purchased some cheap thread online. And then I heard about cheap thread being a not so good idea, so I held a strand of it up against the light and I noticed that the cheap thread was a lot fuzzier than my better quality sewing thread I had.
Then I decided to test the strength of the cheap thread, so I wrapped a strand of it, each end around a finger and pulled. Let’s just say it didn’t take much strength to break it. But, the good quality thread took a lot more strength to break the thread.
What about thread weight?
To be honest I really don’t pay that much attention to the thread weight or the thread sizes of my sewing thread. Mainly because I mostly use cotton fabric and all purpose thread for my sewing projects.
The most common weight of thread is 40 wt or 50 wt, and this is usually the weight of all-purpose thread. The higher the number means the finer the thread, and the lower the number means the thicker the thread.
If you’re going to sew heavy fabric like denim then you may need a thicker thread. And if you’re going to sew a delicate light fabric then you may need to use finer thread.
Thread Brands
Now we’re going to get into the best thread brands. I’m just going to name a couple of different sewing thread brands. But, there are other great brands that I have not mentioned. Everybody has different preferences on what sewing thread they use and everyone like different brands. And this post is about my favorite brands of sewing thread.
Different thread brands usually have different prices. The price usually depends on the thread type you want and how many yards are on the spool. The price can also depend on where you are located and what store you’re buying your thread from.
Gutermann Sewing Thread
This is one of my favorite sewing thread. Gutermann is high quality brand of thread and this thread is a popular choice for a lot of seamstresses and quilters.
This is strong thread that can handle the high speed of machine sewing, but is also great for hand sewing and also if you want to do hand quilting. Gutermann makes polyester sew-all thread, cotton thread, special thread, glittery sewing threads, silk threads and more. So, whatever kind of sewing thread you want for your various projects, Gutermann is sure to have them.
Gutermann is one of the more expensive brands of thread you can buy. But, this sewing thread is well worth it, because this is one of the best threads you can buy.
Sew-ology Sewing Thread
This is Hobby Lobby’s brand of sewing thread. Sew-ology and Gutermann sewing threads are the two main sewing threads I use. You can get Sew-ology thread in cotton, polyester and metallic.
One of the things I like best about it is that this thread is always on sale, the spools are usually 0.99 cents or $1.99 each. If you’re on a budget then this sewing thread maybe the best choice for you.
If you haven’t heard of this brand or just haven’t tried it out yet. This is a high-quality sewing thread that is great for all kinds of sewing projects. I love this thread and I encourage you to check out this sewing thread next time you go to your Hobby Lobby.
Coats & Clark Sewing Thread
Here is another great brand of sewing thread. Coats and Clark brand sewing thread has been around for many years, since the early 1800s. So, I would say that they know what they are doing, since they’ve been in business for so long.
This is high-quality thread that will make strong seams and this brand can be found in a lot of different stores. Like other sewing thread brands you can get this sewing thread made with natural fibers (cotton) or synthetic fibers (polyester).
Extra
And there are many other brands of sewing thread out there that would be a good choice. But, it would be overwhelming to put all of the different thread choices in the post. So, I just decided to put three of my favorite brands in this post, and any of these would be a excellent choice for your next sewing project.
And if you want to use another brand I haven’t mentioned, you can read the reviews and see what other seamstresses have to say about it. Or, get a spool of it and see what you think. Trying a thread brand out yourself is usually the best way to see if you like that brand. Because everybody has different preferences on what they like.
All of these threads above are durable threads and they all have many beautiful colors to choose from. So, you can find the perfect spool of thread.
Thank you for reading this post about the best brands of sewing thread, and I hope that this post helps you with pick the best brand of sewing thread for your project.
