Felt is one of the best crafting materials out there and felt is a very durable fabric. I love crafting with felt, but with all the different types of felt out there which one do you choose?
This post is all about the different types of felt and how you choose felt for your projects. Felt is a very popular choice for crafting and felt can come in different types and in a wide range of colors.
Felt can be used for a wide range of craft projects. One of the most popular items to make out of felt are soft toys. But, there is a lot of other things you can make out of felt like, bookmarks, ornaments, Christmas decorations, coasters, key chains, jewelry, home decor and more.
Felt can be hand stitches or you can even use a sewing machine with it. When I hand sew my felt project my favorite stitch is the blanket stitch, but if you don’t want to sew your felt projects, then you can glue them.

What is Felt?
Before we get into the various types of felt, let’s talk a little about what felt is. Felt is a non-woven fabric, and that means that felt doesn’t unravel, so you don’t have to worry about finishing the edges.
Felt fabric is made by pressing and matting fibers together. And felt can be made with synthetic fibers or natural fibers.
Felt is a strong, versatile fabric and can be used for many different projects. Felt crafts are one of the most popular crafts out there, and felt can be soft or stiff.
Felt Types
If you’ve looked at felt before then you probably have noticed that there are 3 different kinds of felt. There is wool felt, wool blend felt and acrylic felt.
Acrylic Felt: This is also called craft felt. This is the cheapest felt out there, and craft felt is the most common type of felt you find in a craft store. Acrylic felt is made out of synthetic fibres like plastic.
Wool Felt: This natural felt is the most expensive type of felt out there and also the highest quality. Pure wool felt is said to be the most durable felt and is made usually out of sheep’s wool fibres. 100% wool felt is made out of all natural fibres and has a really soft texture.
Wool Blend Felt: This felt is most affordable than 100% wool felt, but is still a little more expense than acrylic felt. Wool blend felt is made with a blend of wool fibers and synthetic fibers, like rayon or polyester fiber. This type of felt is great if you feel 100% wool felt is too expensive for your felt projects and wool blend felt is known for being durable and easy to cut.
These are the 3 main types of felt out there to choose from. And all 3 of these felts would be great for your next project.
Which Felt to Choose?
I’ve shown you the different types of felt, now we’ll talk about choosing the right felt. A lot of crafters prefer using the 100% wool felt or wool blend felt, instead of the craft felt. Because it’s said to be more durable than regular craft felt.
I have used both craft felt and Merino wool blend felt and to be honest I like them both. I have noticed that the wool blend felt is thicker than the acrylic felt. And if I was going to make something that would be used a lot, I would probably use the wool blend felt or the 100% wool felt. And no matter which felt you use all of these felts come in various colors.
The type of felt you use also depends on if you want to use natural materials or synthetic materials. Because some crafters may not like using synthetic felt when they can use natural felt.
But, acrylic felt is the ideal material for kids craft or if you’re just starting to craft. Or, if you just prefer using craft felt. I have also used acrylic felt to test out a pattern before I use the more expensive felt.
But, it really just depends on what felt you want to use. Like I’ve said before there is no right or wrong in crafting, just personal preference. If you’ve never used felt before and you don’t know if you’ll like using it, then I would start with acrylic felt.
Thank you for reading this post about the different types of felt. I hope that this post has helped you learn a little bit more about crafting with felt.
