I love pumpkin crafts, I recently finished a pumpkin shuttle tatting pattern. And I decided to make a tutorial on how to make a easy felt pumpkin.
And this free pattern is for 2 sizes of pumpkins. So, you can have different sizes of pumpkins for your pumpkin patch. Felt pumpkin patterns are one of my favorite fall sewing crafts.
Felt crafts is one of the easiest crafts you can make and they’re so much fun. Felt is also a easy material to work with and you can use acrylic felt, wool felt or wool blend felt.
The felt I used to create this free felt pumpkin pattern is actually Merino wool blend felt. But, you could use acrylic felt if you want to, just make sure that your felt is soft felt and not stiff felt.
I use acrylic felt a lot, but for this felt pattern I decided to play around with wool blend felt. This is actually the first time I used wool blend felt and I love it. I linked below in the supplies list the felt I used.
This felt pumpkin craft is easy and adorable. This free felt pattern uses orange and green felt.

Supplies
- Felt in orange and green (I linked the felt colors I used, but from this Etsy shop you can also purchase bundles of the felt).
- Poly-fil.
- Embroidery floss (I used the DMC embroidery thread number 51).
- Embroidery needle (I used a size 5 embroidery needle).
- Scissors (Here are the scissors I used to cut my felt, and these are the scissors I used for the curves).
- You can also purchase the ad-free PDF pattern on my Etsy shop for a small fee Here.
Here is the felt pumpkin pattern template PDF. This is the pattern pieces for the pumpkin.
And for this little pumpkin you’ll use only two stitches, the blanket stitch and the back stitch. You’ll use the back stitch to embroider the pumpkins and the blanket stitch to sew the pumpkin together.
The PDF pattern pieces include the stem pattern piece and the leaf pattern piece. And I use felt for my stem and leaf, but you could also use a pipe cleaner for the felt fabric pumpkins.
The finished pumpkins are approx. 4″ wide and 4 1/4″ tall with the stem for the large pumpkin and approx. 2 1/2″ wide and 2 1/2″ tall with the stem for the small pumpkin.
And now for the fun part, making the pumpkin.
Go!
Step 1: Cut out the pumpkin pieces, I used orange for the pumpkin and green for the stem and leaf. But you could used different colors for your pumpkins, I think that brown felt would also look good for the leaf and stem.
Step 2: Embroider the lines on the pumpkin. I used a heat erasable pen to draw the lines on the pumpkin, so I could embroider them, but you could use a fabric marker instead. And with the pens I use I can just use a small iron to remove the marks.
Step 3: Place the pumpkin body felt pieces right sides together and pin the pumpkin stem between the two pumpkin pieces on the top of the pumpkin. And pin the leaf on the top of the pumpkin.
Step 4: Starting on the side of the pumpkin, stitch up the sides and across the top of the pumpkin securing the stem and leaf on the pumpkin using your orange thread, leaving a little open spot the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 5: Stuff the pumpkin with the poly-fil, and finish stitching the open side of the pumpkin closed.
And now you have a finished pumpkin and these mini pumpkins are great fall decor or they can be toys. You could even use these cute pumpkins as decor for your Thanksgiving dinner table.
You could even use green embroidery floss to embroider the leaf, and instead of stitching the leaf on the pumpkin you could even use hot glue to glue the leaf on. Or, you could stitch the leaf and add a little hot glue under the leaf to help secure it.
And I love the orange embroidery floss I used for this pumpkin. I really like the wool blend orange felt I used. When I was cutting out the pumpkin, I used freezer paper to get the felt cut out as perfectly as I could.
I used the blanket stitch in this sewing project to sew the pumpkin together, but you could also use the whip stitch instead. And instead of the back stitch for embroidering the lines you could use the running stitch instead.
Thank you for reading this free felt pumpkin pattern and I hope that you enjoyed this free tutorial.
