This recipe is for a 3-ingredient brown sugar cookies recipe. That’s right this simple cookie recipe only has three ingredients. All it has is the most basic ingredients, flour, butter, and brown sugar. So, this is a very easy recipe. And you maybe thinking how good can they be with just these ingredients. But, they’re really great for being so simple.
Even though the recipe is a 3-ingredient recipe. There’s one more ingredient that I think would make a great addition to the recipe. Like a extract of some flavor, I think a almond extract or a vanilla extract would be great. Or you could also use a cherry or lemon or maybe even an orange extract flavor. And the amount of extract you add to the recipe depends on the amount of other ingredients in the recipe or how strong of the extract flavor you want.
Or, you could experiment with other ingredients. Like peanut butter, I think that peanut butter would be great in these cookies, especially chunky peanut butter. Or, maybe chocolate, chocolate and peanut butter are great together. You could take this basic recipe and fly with it. And don’t be afraid to make a mistake, because a lot of recipes are made by just experimenting with different ingredients.
And I don’t chill the dough in this recipe. I do chill the dough in this lemon sugar cookie recipe. I know that a lot of sugar cookie recipes call for chilling the dough. If you do want to chill the dough just wrap it in plastic wrap and chill for thirty to forty-five minutes. But, there’s no set rule you have to follow in making cookies. So, if you need to make a quick batch of cookies and you don’t have the time to chill the dough for a half of an hour to an hour. Don’t worry your cookies will turn out great.
Ingredients
This easy cookie recipe make about 16 cookies. But, it’ll depend on the size of cookies you want to make.
- All Purpose Flour
- Room Temperature Butter (Salted)
- Brown Sugar
And there are different brown sugars you could use. I use a light brown sugar, but you could also use a dark brown sugar.
And make sure to lay your butter out a while before you start to make these simple brown sugar cookies. Because, soft butter is a lot easier to use than hard, cold butter.

Instructions
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper and sit aside for later.
Step 2: Place the softened butter and brown sugar in a mixing bowl or a stand mixer’s bowl. And with an electric mixer, either a hand mixer or a stand mixer, mix until combined.
Step 3: Now add your dry ingredients. Which in this case is just the flour. Add the flour a little bit at a time, about a 1/4 of a cup at a time. And mix until all the flour is combined.
Step 4: Next you need to add just a little of water to the mixture, because it’s dry. You’ll need to add about 2 – 3 tablespoons of water and mix. It will still be crumbly, but that great.
Step 5: Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead the dough a couple of times to make a ball of dough. Take a lightly floured rolling pin and roll the dough to a 1/4 inch thickness.
Step 6: Using a cookie cutter, cut out the cookies. And the fun thing about using a cookie cutter is all the different shapes you can get. And I like to re-roll the extra dough and cut until all the dough is used.
Step 7: With a spatula gently move the cookies to the prepared cookie sheets. But, be very gentle because the dough is fragile.
Step 8: Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are a nice golden brown. Let the baked cookies rest on the baking sheet for a few minutes and then move the cookies to a wire rack or if you don’t have a cooling rack a plate will work just fine. And if you want to decorate the cookies make sure that they cool completely before you decorate.
There’s your three ingredient cookies. And you can store the baked cookies in a airtight container or you could also store them in a cute cookie jar. And down below is the recipe card, so you can see the exact measurements. You could even use a fork or a sharp knife to make a little criss-cross pattern on top of the cookies before you bake them.

And the next time you make these 3 ingredient brown sugar shortbread cookies try adding a little extract to the dough.
The reason you flour a surface before you roll dough is so the cookie dough won’t stick to the counter. For the same reason that’s why you also flour your rolling pin. You don’t need a lot of flour on your counter or rolling pin, you just need enough flour so the dough won’t stick to the counter or rolling pin.
Since this is a recipe for three ingredient brown sugar cookies I’ll say that I love cookies. From classic sugar cookies to chocolate chip cookies (I also love to put chocolate chips in pancakes). Cookies are a great dessert to start with. Because they’re not as complicated to bake as pies or cakes. And cookies are one of the best treats you can make for a party.
